Unveiling the Punggol Heritage Trail

SINGAPORE – A slice of history has been resurrected as the Punggol Heritage Trail officially opened on August 23. This new 400-meter walk transforms the old single-carriageway Punggol Road into a picturesque path where visitors can meander through lush greenery. This revival not only preserves the historical essence of Old Punggol Road but also provides a serene escape for those looking to connect with nature.

Walking Through History and Nature

Keeping true to its roots, the trail maintains the distinctive, undulating terrain of its predecessor, now surrounded by a flourishing coastal forest. Adding a touch of nostalgia, an old orange-and-white bus stop—once a bustling transportation hub—now serves as a charming shelter for trail visitors.

A Step Back to Kampong Wak Sumang

Not far from here lies the remnants of Kampong Wak Sumang, one of Singapore’s earliest fishing villages, steeped in heritage. Ms. Ang Chiean Hong, from the National Parks Board, emphasized the significance of maintaining this area: "It’s a treasure trove of memories, evoking the nostalgic essence of Old Punggol."

Trail Plans and Community Engagement

Set to stretch 1.3 kilometers upon completion by 2026, the trail will stretch from Punggol Waterway Park to Punggol Point Park. On its opening day, local leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, joined community members for a tree-planting initiative, breathing new life into this heritage project.

Bridging Nature and Urban Life

Ms. Sun Xueling pointed out that the Punggol Heritage Trail serves as a vital green lung amidst the Punggol Digital District, connecting vibrant business spaces, educational institutions like the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), and residential areas.

Inspiration from the Past—Adventure Ahead!

Planned enhancements include unique zones like Adventure Playground, inspired by the game of pick-up sticks, and Backwoods Trail, reminiscent of snakes and ladders. National Parks promised these will be completed by the end of 2025, turning the trail into a family-friendly destination.

Personal Stories and Community Connection

Among the trail's first adventurers was 35-year-old technician Mr. Syazrin Khairi, who fondly recalls riding motorbikes down the old road with friends in his youth. "It’s nice to see that it’s preserved. The heritage trail truly does evoke those cherished memories," he shared.

A Gateway to Nature for Students

Adjacent to SIT, the trail boasts multiple entry points, making it easily accessible for students. Since its opening in May, the new campus has attracted about 11,000 students.

Irfan Rosmadi, a second-year student and president of the environmental club at SIT, sees the trail as an exciting opportunity for engagement. "It will draw students intrigued by environmentalism and inspire them to participate in activities like planting native flora,” he explained.

A Timeless Experience Awaits You!

The Punggol Heritage Trail promises to be more than just a scenic path; it is a pathway connecting the past with the present while fostering community spirit and environmental awareness. Take a step back in time and immerse yourself in the greenery and nostalgia of this delightful heritage experience!
