A Walk Down Memory Lane in Singapore

SINGAPORE – Punggol's past has come alive with the opening of a 400m section of the Punggol Heritage Trail on August 23, transforming a former single carriageway into a picturesque path surrounded by vibrant greenery.

This reimagined trail proudly showcases the unique rolling landscape of the old Punggol Road, now affectionately known as Old Punggol Road, while preserving the lush, coastal forest vegetation that thrives in the area.

Nostalgic Touches Amid Modern Development

Guests to the trail can now find a nostalgic orange-and-white bus stop that harkens back to simpler times, standing on the spot of the original bus stop—now repurposed as a cozy shelter for visitors.

Located near Kampong Wak Sumang, one of Singapore’s earliest fishing villages, the area is steeped in history. "Keeping this as a heritage area brings back those cherished memories and a sense of nostalgia," said Ms. Ang Chiean Hong, NParks' coordinating director of parks development.

A Green Connection to the Future

The entire trail, which will stretch 1.3km upon completion by the end of 2026, aims to link Punggol Waterway Park to Punggol Point Park. On the day of the opening, prominent advisers from Punggol GRC joined local residents for a tree-planting ceremony, symbolizing the community’s commitment to nature.

"The Punggol Heritage Trail not only preserves the rustic charm of Old Punggol Road but also serves as a vital green space amidst the bustling Punggol Digital District, connecting offices, the new Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), and residential areas,” noted Senior Minister of State Sun Xueling.

Innovative Play Spaces Await!

Plans for the trail were unveiled in 2018 alongside the creation of Singapore's first smart district. NParks has exciting features lined up, including two zones set to be completed by late 2025. One area will feature an Adventure Playground inspired by the game of pick-up sticks, while another, the Backwoods Trail, will present a fun twist with sections resembling a snakes and ladders game.

Community Voices: Reflecting on Change

The trail is eliciting fond memories from locals like 35-year-old technician, Mr. Syazrin Khairi, who recalls his teenage days riding motorbikes along Old Punggol Road to unwind at Punggol Settlement.

"Much has changed over the years, but retaining the essence of the old road is truly special. The heritage trail brings back those old memories," he shared.

An Educational Adventure for Students

SIT students are also excited about the proximity of the heritage trail, with four entry points leading from campus, plus additional access points throughout Punggol. The new SIT campus, fully operational since May, houses around 11,000 students.

Second-year student Irfan Rosmadi, president of the Action for Environment Conservation club, sees great potential for educational initiative through the trail. "The site offers a unique opportunity to explore native flora and fauna, engaging students interested in environmentalism to participate in activities like planting and nature walks," he said.
