In a dramatic twist from behind bars, Vietnamese real estate mogul Truong My Lan is promising to turn her beleaguered property empire into a lucrative 'golden goose' that could help repay the staggering sums she embezzled. Facing the death penalty for orchestrating a colossal fraud amounting to $27 billion, Lan is making a last-ditch appeal for clemency through her lawyer.
Lan's legal troubles escalated after her appeal against a death sentence was rejected last December. Convicted of stealing from Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB), the court maintained her sentence but indicated that she could still avoid execution if she returned three-quarters of the stolen amount.
In a bold move, Lan wrote a letter from prison to a government committee responsible for her assets, claiming her vast property worth is significantly undervalued. Initially valued at approximately $9.7 billion, she argues that recent land price adjustments in Ho Chi Minh City could potentially triple or quadruple the worth of her holdings.
"With my 30 years in real estate and in-depth legal knowledge, I believe I can turn my assets into a cash flow machine for the state," Lan asserted in her correspondence, pleading for the opportunity to oversee her properties.”},{
