In a dramatic early morning confrontation, a 35-year-old man was shot dead by police in Bayan Lepas, Penang, after he allegedly opened fire on officers during a crime prevention operation.

The encounter unfolded around 4:05 AM when police officers, conducting routine patrols, approached a suspicious vehicle parked on Lintang Bukit Jambul. Despite identifying themselves, the man exited the car and aimed his weapon at the officers.

Acting in self-defense, the police returned fire, resulting in the suspect’s death at the scene. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a trove of dangerous items: a pistol with three bullets, an iron rod, two machetes, and about 22.5 grams of suspected methamphetamine. Notably, law enforcement also found tools indicative of housebreaking.

Police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad revealed that the deceased had an extensive criminal history, facing charges for 19 serious crimes and 15 drug offenses.

In the wake of this life-threatening encounter, authorities arrested eight additional suspects—seven men and one woman—who are believed to have connections with the deceased. Hamzah indicated that while four of these individuals had prior criminal records, the rest were new to law enforcement's radar.

This extensive operation has reportedly led to the resolution of 25 different robbery and housebreaking cases across Penang, with estimated losses tallying up to RM500,000.

As this elaborate criminal network unravels, the public is reminded of the ongoing battle against crime and the crucial role of law enforcement in safeguarding communities. Stay tuned for more updates as the investigation continues!
