Authorities Dive Into Sammy Obeid’s Allegations After Live Show Controversy
In a dramatic twist, Singaporean officials are contemplating "further steps" following comedian Sammy Obeid’s sensational yet "completely fictional" portrayal of events surrounding his canceled performance. The assertion came from Edwin Tong, the Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs, during a media briefing on August 31.
Obeid ignited an online storm when he took to Instagram to assert that his script had been rejected not once, but twice. He alleged that he was instructed to eliminate references related to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. His post quickly garnered popularity, amassing over 49,000 likes and 6,000 shares.
The Comedian's Struggle: A Tale of Censorship?
In his account, Obeid claimed that his initial script faced rejection after a prolonged wait, despite his cautious approach of limiting references to Palestine. After making the requested changes, he was met with yet another rejection, this time due to what he described as insufficient time for resubmission.
Government Responds: No Edits Were Requested
However, Mr. Tong has firmly denied Obeid's narrative, asserting that the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) did not request any amendments to his script. This assertion was corroborated by Obeid’s agent.
"Mr. Obeid’s application was rejected because it was late," Tong clarified, emphasizing that applications must be submitted 40 working days in advance. In this case, Obeid applied just 30 days before the show, on August 15, for an event scheduled on August 31.
What Really Happened? IMDA Sets the Record Straight
To shed light on Obeid’s claims, IMDA pointed out that the local representative for the event was informed about the late application on August 19 and again reiterated this on August 25. They also noted that the organizer had clearly communicated to Obeid about the timing issues and had supporting evidence.
As this saga unfolds, the spotlight remains on Obeid’s motivations behind his controversial statements, leaving many questioning the clash between artistic expression and regulatory frameworks.
