In a shocking incident at Singapore's Lorong Chuan MRT Station, a commuter is on trial after allegedly assaulting a security officer, leading to significant injuries. 31-year-old Alina Meridian is contesting charges related to the altercation that took place on August 17, 2024.
The security officer involved, 66-year-old Madam Cindy Tay Jui Hwa, was conducting routine bag screenings as part of her duties when she requested Meridian to submit her bag for screening. While the station was quiet that Saturday morning, tensions flared when Meridian refused to comply.
A Dangerous Confrontation
According to witness accounts, after being asked to stop for screening, Meridian allegedly became enraged and threw her bag to the floor. Mdm Tay recounted that she initially thought Meridian hadn’t heard her, but when she tapped her on the shoulder to repeat the request, things escalated quickly. Meridian reportedly shoved Mdm Tay, causing her to fall and hit her head. "I felt a big bump on my head and noticed it was bleeding," Mdm Tay described.
The brutal encounter was caught on closed-circuit television, showing the moment Mdm Tay was struck and how she fell backwards with force. "He didn’t seem remorseful at all; instead, he continued to shout and insult us," Mdm Tay recalled.
The Trial and Cross-Examination
During the trial, Meridian, who represented herself, challenged Mdm Tay’s competency in handling the situation. "As a senior officer, shouldn’t you know de-escalation tactics?" Meridian questioned, provoking a heated exchange. Mdm Tay insisted her role was strictly to conduct screenings and she could not intervene in how commuters managed their belongings.
The prosecutor interjected at several points, reminding Meridian to focus on asking questions rather than making statements.
Potential Consequences
If convicted, Meridian faces serious repercussions, including imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of up to S$5,000 for causing harm. Moreover, the charges also include using threatening behavior, which could add an additional penalty of up to 12 months in jail and the same fine.
The trial continues, with additional testimonies expected from other security officers who were present during the incident. The outcome of this case could further highlight the challenges faced by security personnel in public spaces.
