Two Drivers Convicted After School Crash

In a shocking incident that unfolded near Anglo-Chinese School (ACS) Independent, two drivers who ran a red light have been convicted of dangerous driving, highlighting alarming safety concerns in school zones.

Details of the Incident

The crash occurred around 7:20 PM on June 24, 2024, as Milton Ng Ban Huat, 56, was driving towards Clementi Road when he and fellow driver Edwin Leong Chiang Ming sped through a red light, colliding with a third vehicle.

In a twist, camera footage revealed that Leong's car struck the third vehicle first, forcing Ng's car to crash into the center road divider. Miraculously, there were no injuries reported.

Legal Consequences and Sentencing

Ng, who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving on September 8, awaits sentencing on September 29. Meanwhile, Leong had already been fined $3,000 and disqualified from driving for 12 months following his admission of guilt in May 2025.

Judge Highlights Dangerous Driving

District Judge John Ng expressed deep concern during the court proceedings, citing Ng's speed—99 km/h—exceeding the limit in school areas. This reckless behavior posed severe risks to students and other road users.

The Deputy Public Prosecutor recommended the maximum fine of $5,000 and a driving ban of 12 to 15 months for Ng, citing his greater reaction time to prevent the accident.

Defensive Arguments and Department's Response

Ng's lawyer argued for a shorter disqualification, suggesting his client was merely distracted by Leong's vehicle. However, the ISD stated that despite Ng's actions being personal, public officers are held to high standards of conduct and integrity, pledging to take appropriate action against him.

A Call for Vigilance in School Areas

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for increased vigilance and adherence to traffic regulations, especially near schools where children are at risk. Authorities are encouraged to implement stricter measures to ensure road safety for all.
