
Clean Hydrogen Revolution: Inner Mongolia and Ningxia Lead the Charge!

In a groundbreaking move towards achieving carbon neutrality, Inner Mongolia and the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region have taken significant strides in producing green hydrogen from renewable energy. This innovative approach capitalizes on their vast renewable resources, positioning them to not only satisfy local demand but also supply nearby markets.
Government officials in both regions are pushing for the establishment of national policies, technical standards, and safety protocols that will catalyze the growth of this eco-friendly hydrogen market. Inner Mongolia, in particular, has emerged as a frontrunner in this green energy revolution. Boasting incredible wind and solar resources, the area is capable of producing an impressive 60,000 metric tons of green hydrogen annually, as reported by the region's energy administration. In fact, Inner Mongolia holds more than half of China’s wind energy capabilities and over 20% of its solar potential, according to Zhao Junpeng, deputy head of the science and equipment department at the energy administration.
This vast renewable energy infrastructure enables the region to produce hydrogen at a remarkably low cost, meeting the skyrocketing demand in densely populated cities like Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei—along with neighboring Ningxia. Since the beginning of 2022, Inner Mongolia has rolled out 14 progressive policies addressing various facets of the hydrogen industry—from production to storage and even transportation. These initiatives include easing regulations for green hydrogen projects operating outside chemical parks, facilitating a more streamlined process for growth.
Additionally, Inner Mongolia is integrating green hydrogen into multiple industries, including transportation and metal smelting, marking a versatile application of this clean fuel. Over 400 hydrogen-fueled vehicles are already in operation within the region, alongside a successful trial run of a hydrogen-powered train, showcasing the ambitious advancements in sustainable transport.
In a bold step toward climate goals, Inner Mongolia plans to incorporate a minimum of 10% green hydrogen into coal-fired power generation, setting a precedent for transitioning from traditional energy sources. This commitment could significantly lower carbon emissions in the energy sector.
