In a dramatic escalation of tensions, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has deployed both a vessel and an aircraft to confront a Chinese research ship accused of conducting unlawful marine scientific research within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
On May 1, the notorious Chinese Research Vessel (CRV) Tan Suo 3 was detected operating nearly 92 nautical miles off the northern Ilocos coast. The PCG highlighted that the ship's unusual movements were not only inconsistent with international navigation laws but also a blatant violation of Filipino sovereignty.
Responding swiftly, the PCG launched a maritime law enforcement operation aimed at thwarting the ship's 'unlawful activities'. According to their statement, the operation was successful in preventing the Chinese vessel from continuing its intrusive research.
Intriguingly, during the confrontation, the PCG noted the presence of a manned deep-sea submersible named Shenhai Yongshi, or Deep-Sea Warrior, which was subsequently retrieved by the Chinese vessel. This submersible is known for its capabilities to dive to depths of 4,500 meters, typically employed for deep-sea exploration and scientific missions.
The PCG's observations also included a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat recovering a mysterious yellow piece of equipment, believed to be linked to marine research activities. This further emphasizes the concerning nature of the Chinese vessel's operations.
"These actions by the CRV provide clear evidence that the People's Republic of China is conducting illegal marine scientific research within our exclusive economic zone, without the necessary legal authority," the PCG stated.
As the situation develops, the Chinese Embassy in Manila has yet to respond to requests for clarification, leaving many questioning the future of Philippine sovereignty over its waters.
