SINGAPORE – Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat expressed his strong desire to remain in the Bishan-Toa Payoh Group Representation Constituency (GRC) for the impending General Election (GE2025), which is anticipated to be held by November.

Having been elected as MP for the GRC first in 2015 and subsequently re-elected in 2020, Mr. Chee stated, “I’ve been here for nearly 10 years, and I genuinely hope to continue serving the community and the residents.”

His comments came during a community event at the HDB Hub in Toa Payoh on January 26, shortly after the establishment of the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC). When queried by The Straits Times about preparations for the upcoming election amid the committee's formation, he assured, “We await the EBRC report to understand any changes to our boundaries, but I sincerely hope to stay in Bishan-Toa Payoh.”

The EBRC’s report is crucial as it sets the stage for the redrawing of Singapore’s electoral constituencies, a fundamental step prior to any general elections. Mr. Chee highlighted that he and his fellow MPs for Bishan-Toa Payoh have kept community engagement alive since the last elections in July 2020, maintaining a robust schedule of activities, including market visits and community events.

Joining Mr. Chee in the Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC are esteemed colleagues, including anchor minister Ng Eng Hen, the Minister for Defence, as well as MPs Saktiandi Supaat and Chong Kee Hiong.

Asked whether he would be prepared to take on the role of anchor minister, should the need arise, Mr. Chee remarked, “That decision lies with PM Lawrence Wong.” Nonetheless, he is brimming with plans to enhance community facilities and services, expressing hope for the opportunity to continue in a service capacity in the area.

At the community event, Mr. Chee, along with Mr. Saktiandi and Minister of State for Education and Manpower Gan Siow Huang, distributed 888 pairs of mandarin oranges to residents, celebrating the auspicious occasion of Chinese New Year, which falls on January 29. This initiative was organized by the People's Association Malay Activity Executive Committees Council (PA Mesra) to foster goodwill among residents.

Praising the event, Mr. Chee underscored its significance in showcasing Singapore's rich multiracial society. “This initiative is crucial in promoting mutual understanding of our diverse cultures and heritage,” he stated.

PA Mesra chairwoman A.J. Suhani Sujari highlighted the council's aim to strengthen ties between the Malay/Muslim community and their non-Malay neighbors, cultivating a strong sense of community during festive seasons.

With GE2025 on the horizon, all eyes will be on the Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC as the community looks forward to the election, and Mr. Chee’s commitment to service continues to resonate with residents. Stay tuned as the political landscape evolves!
