SINGAPORE - Commuters at Raffles Place MRT station faced an unexpected and alarming situation on the morning of September 17 when water began pouring from the ceiling, creating a makeshift waterfall right on the platform.
Around 9 AM, travelers stepping off North-South Line trains were met with a nerve-wracking ‘loud raining noise’. Eyewitnesses took to Reddit and HardwareZone to share their bewilderment at the sight of water spilling down from multiple ceiling panels.
Fortunately, the liquid appeared to be odorless, but it didn’t take long for station staff from SMRT to step in, directing commuters away from the slippery area.
One Reddit user, TheDoorDoesntWork, posted a gripping image showing newspapers hastily spread across the platform, desperately trying to soak up the water that extended from one end to the other.
By the time The Straits Times arrived just before noon, the situation had not improved—all eyes were on the ongoing water drips and the corralled section, where containers were set up to catch the relentless leaks.
Adding to the drama, the escalators leading to the lower platform were also out of service, compounding the chaos.
Commuter Maya Abdolah expressed her concerns, stating, "Now the situation seems fine, but I fear this could affect the evening rush hour. This station is extremely busy, and the affected area is quite expansive."
Chef Haiqal Loveridge chimed in to underscore the worrying pattern, noting that there had been disruptions earlier that day on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL). "It’s unfortunate to see such issues right in the heart of the Central Business District, especially with tourists witnessing the station in this state," he lamented.
In the wake of this incident, ST has reached out to SMRT for further clarity and updates. Meanwhile, commuters are left hoping for swift resolutions to maintain the integrity of Singapore's bustling public transport system.
