SINGAPORE – In a stunning display of musical legacy, three legendary Singaporean bands—Silver Strings, Mel & Joe, and Lovehunters—are throwing major concerts to mark impressive milestones in their storied careers!
Silver Strings at 60: A Heartfelt Farewell
After six decades of making waves in the music scene, Silver Strings is gearing up for what could be their final performance. The band, which kicked off their journey in 1965—the year Singapore claimed its independence—is set to take the stage at RELC International Hotel on September 6.
At 83, band leader Audie Ng reflects on their remarkable journey, acknowledging that this may very well be their swan song: 'I can’t foresee being able to perform five years from now.' The current lineup also features seasoned members, including 80-year-old singer Percival De Silva and 76-year-old lead guitarist Johnny Yeow.
Fans can expect an unforgettable 3½-hour showcase, featuring vibrant performances of rock classics from the 70s and 80s, as well as beloved originals from their early days. Notably, their performance is set to include the touching tribute to former lead singer Shirley Nair, who graced the band in the 60s.
Mel & Joe at 55: A Celebration of Nostalgia
Mel & Joe are stepping into their 55th year with a concert to be held on August 23 at the Esplanade Concert Hall. The sibling duo first charmed crowds in 1971 on a television talent show, and that magic remains palpable today. Mel, now 66, emphasizes the unique bond they share on stage: 'We don’t even have to say anything, just a look is enough!'
This nostalgic trip will encapsulate an impressive era of music, with covers spanning from country tunes to pop hits by legends like the Bee Gees and Fleetwood Mac. The emotionally charged concert will also pay tribute to their late brother Dennis, with not only family but also friends taking part.
Lovehunters at 40: A Musical Renaissance
Marking their 40th anniversary, the iconic band Lovehunters is set to make waves on September 13 at The Theatre at Mediacorp. This concert promises to blend their signature rock sound with classical influences, featuring a full-fledged ensemble that includes gamelan players and a string section.
Hailed for their diverse musical prowess, band members expressed excitement over finally replicating their studio magic live. 'We aren’t just a rock band—we’re a world music entity,' says bassist Yazid Abu Bakar. Fans can look forward to fresh arrangements and a two-hour set encompassing at least 20 beloved hits.
The Lovehunters also aim to reconnect with their fans, not just locally but from Malaysia and Brunei as well. With a focus on positive messages in their music, the band continues to shed light on important social issues, making their upcoming performance not just a concert but a heartfelt celebration.
These three bands represent the heart and soul of Singapore’s music landscape, and their milestone concerts are sure to resonate with fans—both old and new! Don't miss the chance to witness history and experience the magic of live music!
