Within hours, it also captured the moon, showcasing our celestial neighborhood from an astounding distance.

Mission Details: A Journey to a Quasi-Moon

At that time, Tianwen 2 had spent 33 days in orbit around Earth, and officials reported that it was over 12 million kilometers (7.46 million miles) from home, functioning flawlessly. Earlier, the probe also revealed the first glimpse of itself, sending back an image of one of its solar arrays via an engineering camera.

Exploring Kamo'oalewa: What Awaits?

This mission marks China's inaugural venture into asteroid exploration. Tianwen 2 is set to reach Kamo'oalewa—one of Earth’s seven known "quasi-moons"—around July 2026. First, it will analyze the asteroid to identify optimal landing spots for sample collection before returning to Earth, expected to deliver its treasures in a reentry capsule by late 2027.

Why is this mission so crucial? According to Han Siyuan, deputy director of the Lunar Exploration and Space Engineering Center (LESEC), Kamo'oalewa could contain primordial materials from the solar system’s formation. This knowledge is vital for understanding not just the composition of our early solar neighborhood but also the processes that shaped its evolution.
