Historic Transition for South32's Hermosa Mine

South32's ambitious Hermosa mine project in Arizona has just hit a significant permitting milestone, receiving the highly anticipated draft environmental impact statement (EIS) from the US Forest Service (USFS). This development not only marks a key step for the proposed zinc-manganese mine but also highlights its role as a critical player in the U.S. mining landscape.

A Project with Essential Minerals

What sets Hermosa apart? It’s the only advanced project in the U.S. capable of producing two federally recognized critical minerals: zinc and manganese. In 2023, it became the first mining project to be included in the Biden administration’s FAST-41 permitting program, accelerating its pathway to production and underlining its national significance.

Strategic Location and Environmentally Conscious Design

Nestled in the breathtaking Patagonia Mountains, approximately 80 kilometers southeast of Tucson, the Hermosa project encompasses key mineral deposits like the zinc-lead-silver Taylor sulphide and the zinc-manganese-silver Clark oxide deposits. The Taylor deposit has already attracted a massive investment of $2.16 billion, establishing it as one of Arizona’s largest mining initiatives.

Innovative and Sustainable Mining Practices

With a controlled footprint of just over 600 acres, Hermosa promises an eco-friendly mining approach, using 75% less water than traditional mining operations in the region. South32's commitment to minimizing environmental impact is evident through its careful planning and advanced technology.

Navigating Regulatory Challenges Successfully

The project has successfully secured essential state permits from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) since all mining activities will take place on privately owned land. Notably, construction is already underway, with South32 reporting that it is 40% complete!

The USFS has identified an optimal approach for the Hermosa mine’s operational plan, taking into account both benefits and environmental impacts. Critical elements include the construction of a 138kV power line, a primary access road, and a modern dry-stack tailings facility—all designed to ensure sustainability and efficiency.
