2024-10-01

SINGAPORE – Thundery Showers Forecasted

If you’re planning to venture outside in the next couple of weeks, don’t forget to grab your umbrella! The Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) has issued a forecast predicting thundery showers in the afternoons for the first half of October.

Rain Expectation and Weather Conditions

Expect rain to sweep across various parts of the island, particularly in the afternoons, with the occasional extension of these showers into the evenings. Inter-monsoon conditions are anticipated during the first week, which typically bring light winds and a surge in thunderstorm activity.

Temperature Outlook

During this period, daily maximum temperatures are expected to hover between 32°C and 34°C, with some days potentially exceeding 34°C. For context, last month ended on a hot note, with temperatures consistently breaching the 33°C mark. Ang Mo Kio recorded a peak of 35.7°C on September 22, a reflection of the sweltering heat that often precedes rain.

September’s Weather Recap

The latter half of September brought unusual weather patterns, with substantial rainfall reported across the island. The notorious Sumatra squalls swept in, causing widespread thundery showers and gusty winds. On September 17, wind gusts reached an alarming 80 km/h in some areas, with the East Coast Parkway registering an impressive 83.2 km/h.

Heavy Downpours

September 24 also saw heavy downpours due to converging winds and intense solar heating, culminating in a staggering 95.4 mm of rainfall at Jurong Pier, marking the highest daily total for the second half of the month.

Be Prepared for Sudden Weather Changes

As the weather transitions this October, stay tuned for updates and prepare for sudden weather changes. Whether you’re commuting or enjoying outdoor activities, it’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the unpredictable Singaporean weather!
