SINGAPORE: Get ready for gridlock! If you're planning to travel through the Singapore-Malaysia land checkpoints during the Vesak Day long weekend, brace yourself for some serious delays.
Mark your calendars! Vesak Day falls on May 12 this year, and according to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), both the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints will be buzzing with activity from May 8 to 13.
Travelers are warned to expect extended waiting periods at immigration, as the influx of holidaymakers will lead to increased congestion.
"For those who must travel during this peak time, consider using cross-border bus services to bypass the worst of the traffic,” the ICA suggests.
Last month, more than 2.4 million travelers flocked through the land checkpoints over the Good Friday long weekend, with a mind-boggling peak of over 555,000 people on April 17 alone! Car travelers faced agonizing waits of up to three hours to clear immigration as traffic backed up from Malaysia.
The ICA urges travelers to cooperate with their officers and stresses the importance of following traffic rules and maintaining lane discipline. Remember, ignoring these guidelines could lead to stern action!
Key Tips for a Smoother Journey
To make your journey as hassle-free as possible, here are some essential reminders:
- **Passport Validity**: Ensure your passport has at least six months' validity remaining. If you’re a Singapore permanent resident with a renewed passport, don’t forget to transfer your re-entry permit!
- **Long-term Pass Holders**: Notify the ICA or the Ministry of Manpower of any updates in your passport details prior to returning to Singapore.
- **Faster Immigration**: If you're traveling by car or motorcycle, consider using QR codes for quicker immigration clearance. This tech-friendly option will help speed things up!
- **Bus Travelers**: Use QR codes generated from the MyICA app at automated lanes and special assistance lanes of the checkpoints’ bus halls.
- **Vehicle Entry Permits**: If you're driving a foreign vehicle, verify your Vehicle Entry Permits (VEP) are valid. Motorists lacking valid autopass cards, VEP approval from the LTA, or legal insurance will be turned back.
- **Queue Discipline**: Avoid cutting in line to prevent worsening traffic and endangering other drivers. ICA has warned that any errant motorists will be sent back to the end of the queue!
Plan ahead, stay patient, and have a fantastic Vesak Day weekend! Safe travels!
