This past weekend, Curtin University transformed into a vibrant hub for space enthusiasts, drawing an impressive crowd of over 9,000 attendees to its highly anticipated event, Cosmos on Campus. Designed to inspire the next generation of earth and planetary scientists, the festival seamlessly blended art, science, and imagination.
The atmosphere was electrifying as visitors explored stunning seven-meter-wide planetary replicas, each adorned with breathtaking NASA imagery crafted by renowned UK artist Luke Jerram. These lifelike models allowed attendees to examine the craters, valleys, and mountains of both Mars and Earth.
A captivating neon-lit trail guided participants between the planets, creating a magical ambiance that complemented an array of musical performances. The night sky was brought closer to Earth with powerful telescopes, giving attendees a chance to gaze into the cosmos.
The event also featured enlightening talks and fireside chats led by world-renowned experts. Topics ranged from the enigmas trapped in ancient rocks to understanding the deep ocean, and how space science can uncover vital resources on both Earth and Mars.
These discussions highlighted the interconnectedness of earth and planetary science, tackling significant global challenges like climate change and the quest for extraterrestrial life.
Tim Urquhart, Curtin University’s Director of Properties, Facilities, and Development, hailed the event as a perfect platform for capturing the imagination of aspiring space enthusiasts. He described Cosmos on Campus as a "celebration of curiosity, creativity, and community," where individuals could experience the universe's vast mysteries together.
Professor Mark Ogden, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Curtin, emphasized the importance of inspiring young minds. He noted that engaging with eminent scientists could spark a lifelong passion in future explorers and planetary scientists, fueling their dreams right in Western Australia.
He proudly remarked on Curtin's ranking as the top university in Australia for earth sciences, showcasing their commitment to advancing space research across various fields, including planetary science and radio astronomy.
The John Curtin Gallery also joined the festivities, featuring interactive research from Curtin’s School of Earth and Planetary Sciences, along with captivating videos by Luke Jerram about his artistic creations, ensuring the event was a feast for both the mind and the spirit.
