Beware! Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong Exposes New Scam Messages Pretending to Be from Singapore Customs!

2024-09-22

In a shocking revelation, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong has issued a warning to the public regarding a wave of scam messages that deceitfully claim to be from Singapore Customs. The alert comes after Mr. Lee himself received such messages, prompting him to take to Facebook on September 22 to share his experience and sage advice.

Initially, Mr. Lee believed these SMS notifications were authentic due to their alphanumeric sender IDs, which misled him into thinking they were legitimate. He pointed out, “With the SMS Sender ID Registry (SSIR) in place, only verified senders are permitted to use alphanumeric IDs.” However, he noted that all communications from Singapore Government ministries and agencies typically utilize the sender ID format of gov.sg, a clear red flag indicating the fraudulent nature of these messages.

The alarming part is that the scam messages originated from unfamiliar email addresses rather than recognized governmental channels. Lee voiced his concerns regarding how these deceptive communications bypassed the SSIR system, leading to confusion among recipients. The Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore clarified that while the SSIR safeguards SMS messages sent through telecommunications companies, it does not extend to online messaging platforms like iMessage for Apple users or Rich Communication Services (RCS) for Android users.

This oversight means that scammers can easily masquerade as legitimate sender IDs, creating a dangerous confusion for unsuspecting individuals. “These messages can easily be merged with legitimate SMSs,” Mr. Lee explained, emphasizing the importance of vigilance.

He urged the public never to respond to messages received through online applications unless they can confirm the sender's identity. "Just because the sender looks credible, it doesn't guarantee their authenticity," Lee warned. He encouraged individuals to double-check any offers or alarming notifications by contacting the respective organizations directly.

Finally, he appealed to the community to take proactive measures by sharing awareness of these scams with family and friends to avoid falling victim to such deceitful schemes. With technology evolving, so too does the sophistication of scams, making it crucial for every individual to stay informed and cautious.
