A Heartbreaking Loss for Singaporean Politics
In a heartbreaking loss for Singaporean politics, Anthony Lee Yung Hwee, the former Assistant Secretary-General of the Progress Singapore Party (PSP), has succumbed to cancer. His life, though cut tragically short, left an indelible mark on the political landscape. Lee viewed his work and commitment to the PSP as his ultimate legacy—an achievement that many may not fully appreciate.
An Influential Figure
Anthony Lee was not a household name, but his influence within the PSP was profound. I first crossed paths with him in 2019 during the party's formative days, where his passion for political change was infectious. Alongside another key figure, Micheal Chua, Lee played a crucial role in inviting me to embrace the party's vision. Following the 2020 General Election, I had the honor of conducting an interview with Lee for PSP's Coffee Table book—a project that, regrettably, was ultimately shelved due to editorial choices.
Visionary Leader
In our conversation, Lee passionately recounted how he had convinced Dr. Tan Cheng Bock to establish a new political party aimed at fostering unity among opposition forces. His role didn't stop there; he also claimed significant credit for persuading Lee Hsien Yang to join the PSP, highlighting his deep commitment to the party's growth and unity.
The Collaborative Founding Story
However, as often happens in the complex world of politics, varying narratives exist regarding who truly shaped the party's early formation. Lee served as the party’s first Assistant Secretary-General, underscoring his close relationship with Dr. Tan. Yet, dissenting voices from others on the founding Central Executive Committee (CEC) suggest that the story of PSP’s beginnings is much more collaborative than one man's vision.
Electoral Strategist
Always the strategist, Lee identified West Coast GRC as an electoral opportunity, labeling S. Iswaran as the 'weakest' minister. He envisioned a campaign that could topple this GRC, underscoring his ambition and desire to lead. Unfortunately, PSP's swift growth during this period saw rising talents such as Leong Mun Wai, Francis Yeun, Andrew Ng, and Ong Seow Yong join the CEC, which ultimately led to Lee stepping back from his leadership role.
Legacy of Support
Despite his decreased involvement post-2020 elections, Lee remained a supportive figure, assisting with logistics and serving as an informal hub for party activities from his office in Pandan Loop. Our frequent coffee catch-ups became a testament to his ongoing dedication to the party, even from behind the scenes.
Remembering Anthony Lee
Anthony Lee's legacy must be cherished and remembered as the PSP continues to strive for progress. His vision, integrity, and commitment will forever echo within the party.
