In a surprising summer transfer, young defender Adam Aznou has swapped Bayern Munich for Everton, signing a four-year deal that will see him remain on Merseyside until June 2029. As manager David Moyes aimed to inject some much-needed creativity into his squad after a lackluster 13th place finish in the Premier League, Aznou's transfer serves as a pivotal addition, especially following the departure of veteran Ashley Young to Ipswich Town.
While the transfer fee remains undisclosed, estimates suggest Bayern pocketed around €9 million for the promising talent. For Aznou, the move was motivated by a desire for more playing time—opportunities he felt were scarce under Bayern’s coach Vincent Kompany, known for his reluctance to utilize youth players in his inaugural season with the German giants.
Despite Bayern's intentions to keep Aznou and integrate him into their plans, sporting director Christoph Freund disclosed that the club ultimately respected the young player's wish to leave. In a pre-match press conference for the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup against VfB Stuttgart, Freund stated, "We had a plan with Adam. He’s a very talented player. But the player has to be convinced of the club’s plans. It wasn’t our plan to sell him, but it was his big desire to make this transfer. At the end of the day, we decided together that it had to be the best for everyone, including him. He has to be convinced, full of energy and passion, behind what he’s doing."
Aznou's commitment to Bayern came under scrutiny following the team's upset exit from the Club World Cup against Paris Saint-Germain. Unlike many teammates, he notably did not express public support for Jamal Musiala following his injury; instead, he shared a photo with fellow Moroccan Aschraf Hakimi, which did not sit well with Bayern fans. However, it was revealed he had reached out to Musiala privately, indicating that his departure was not influenced by media perception.
Ultimately, Aznou's journey at Bayern concluded after a loan spell with Real Valladolid and two and a half seasons across Bayern's youth, reserve, and senior teams, marking his departure after just one brief appearance in the Club World Cup.
