Bangkok Intensifies Tuberculosis Control Efforts with Annual Screening Initiative

In a significant step towards combating tuberculosis (TB), Bangkok’s Deputy Governor, Associate Professor Tavida Kamolvej, recently presided over the inaugural meeting of the Committee for the Development of Systems to Enhance TB Control Efficiency in the city for the year 2025. This committee aims to streamline TB management and ensure comprehensive health strategies are in place.

The meeting concentrated on critical updates regarding TB operations within Bangkok’s correctional facilities, a unique challenge given the high density of incarcerated individuals. Notably, the committee discussed the ambitious second phase of the TB detection and screening project, which targets densely populated neighborhoods to ensure early diagnosis and treatment.

One of the standout initiatives is the Dusit Model, aimed at fostering proactive screening in high-risk areas. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) revealed plans for a bold project to conduct one million health check-ups, signifying a major public health initiative to identify and address TB cases promptly.

The discussion also highlighted latent TB, urging collaboration among all medical establishments in Bangkok, both public and private. These facilities have been called upon to adhere strictly to the National Tuberculosis Control Guidelines. An essential part of this effort involves monitoring medication adherence, as non-compliance can lead to severe public health implications, including the development of drug-resistant strains of TB. If patients face challenges in their treatment journey, they can be seamlessly referred to local public health service centers via the TB referral center for continued support.

Proposed actions include improving proactive detection and screening, ensuring thorough treatment for both active and latent TB, and enhancing the accuracy and timeliness of data entry into the National Tuberculosis Information Program (NTIP) database.
