Dive into the thrilling atmosphere of AXPONA 2025, where each corner promises auditory wonders! In this segment, we spotlight remarkable experiences with VDM Records and other standout exhibitors.
A Unique Listening Experience with VDM Records
While exploring AXPONA, I was graciously invited by Igor Fiorini from VDM Sound Group to sample a lacquer from the much-anticipated vinyl release of Marco Arcieri’s 'Chopin at Home Vol. 2'. This follow-up to the critically-acclaimed 'Vol. 1', released in 2024, showcases Arcieri's innovative approach to classical music.
Fiorini, the sound designer behind this project, prepared a special setup at the Schaumberg F Room. He played two different takes of a Chopin Mazurka, offering a fresh and almost jazz-inspired interpretation. My ears were treated to a captivating comparison!
Mastering the Take: A Battle of Sound
After keenly listening, I provided feedback to Fiorini on which take resonated with me more. We ended up in perfect harmony—both preferring the second version for its clarity and definition. Fiorini detailed the technical prowess behind the scenes, explaining the cutting heads and preamps used to capture these remarkable sounds.
Premium Audio Equipment: A Feast for the Senses
The stunning playback system in the Schaumberg F Room featured a Grand Prix Audio Monaco 3.0 turntable, complemented by high-end amplifiers from VTL and exquisite Stenheim loudspeakers. It was a luxurious setup that truly showcased the beauty of music.
An Unexpected Gem in Room 484
Next, I ventured into Room 484, presented by Fidelis Distribution, where the air was buzzing with the fresh energy of Patricia Barber’s 'Modern Cool'. This newly pressed 2LP reissue from Impex Records had me rapt, particularly during the immersive track "Constantinople". The details were mesmerizing, the textures rich, and Barber's vocals felt astoundingly alive!
Reevaluating Classic Monitors
The legendary Falcon LS3/5a monitors elevated the entire experience, proving themselves perfect for this rich source material. Driven by Lab12’s Integre4 MK2 integrated amp, the sound was refined and engaging—a great testament to classic BBC design.
Innovative Analog Sources
The setup featured Pure Fidelity’s luxurious Symphony turntable, paired with a Savant Titanium tonearm and Stratos MC cartridge, creating an analog source that was pure magic. The Lab12 Melto2 tube phono preamp rounded out a remarkable listening session.
