Astronomers have made a stunning revelation: they’ve identified the most powerful cosmic explosions since the Big Bang, dubbing them "extreme nuclear transients" (ENTs). These colossal blasts occur when stars, with masses at least three times that of our sun, are obliterated by supermassive black holes.

What Makes ENTs So Extraordinary?

While similar explosive events have been recorded before, the recently uncovered ENTs stand out for their incredible energy output. "We’ve observed stars being shredded apart for over a decade, but these ENTs are on a different level—boasting brightness nearly ten times what we typically see," said Jason Hinkle, a leading researcher from the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy. Hinkle stumbled upon these ENTs while analyzing long-lasting flares emitted from the centers of galaxies. Two significant flares from the European Space Agency's Gaia spacecraft in 2016 and 2018 caught his attention, leading him to a groundbreaking revelation.

Add to this mix a third event noticed in 2020 by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). One particularly extraordinary event, designated Gaia18cdj, released energy exceeding 25 times that of the most powerful supernova ever observed—equivalent to the lifetime energy output of 100 suns!

Not only are ENTs the most powerful explosions we know of, but they also serve as a window into the mysteries of supermassive black holes in distant galaxies.
