Overview of the Lunar Quilt Challenge

Karen Nyberg, the first astronaut to quilt in space, launches an innovative new challenge for crafters across the United States.

Ten years after her venture of stitching together a patchwork of stars aboard the International Space Station, Nyberg invites students and quilters to create the extraordinary "Lunar Quilt."

Who Can Participate?

The "Next Giant Leap: Lunar Quilt Block Challenge" is open to American students in grades 7-12, as well as individual quilters and artists nationwide.

Submission Guidelines

Participants are encouraged to submit moon-themed quilt blocks. The finest creations from each state will be featured in an official Lunar Quilt designed by Nyberg.

Event Details

The completed quilt will be showcased at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts during the "Earth to Space: Arts Breaking the Sky" festival in spring 2025.

Creative Expressions and Techniques

Participants are encouraged to express their interpretation of space exploration. Various techniques like traditional piecing, foundation paper piecing, or appliqué are welcomed.

Important Dates

Contestants can submit two quilt blocks. They must notify organizers by November 20, with digital entries due by December 10, and the announcement of finalists by December 20.

Judging and Final Masterpiece

Jury includes Bonnie Schrock from the National Quilt Museum along with NASA and Kennedy Center officials. Nyberg will sew together selected blocks to create the final quilt.

Festival Information

The Earth to Space Festival is scheduled from March 28 to April 13, 2025, featuring family-friendly concerts and art exhibitions.
