In a groundbreaking revelation, scientists have discovered that signs of planet formation around young stars may occur much sooner than previously thought. This exciting finding comes from the latest high-resolution images obtained through advanced techniques applied to archival radio astronomy data.
Researchers have long been curious about when and how planets, including potentially habitable ones like Earth, begin to form. The new study sheds light on these processes by examining protoplanetary disks—vast clouds of gas and dust surrounding still-forming stars.
These fledgling planets are typically too tiny to be seen directly. However, their gravitational influence can create observable patterns in the protoplanetary disks, such as rings and spirals. Determining when these features emerge has been challenging due to the limited number of nearby disks available for observation.
Led by Ayumu Shoshi from Kyushu University and the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, a team of researchers utilized sophisticated data processing techniques to uncover previously hidden indicators of planet formation within ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) radio telescope archives.
Focusing on 78 disks in the Ophiuchus star-forming region—460 light-years away in the constellation Ophiuchus—the team's refined analysis resulted in high-resolution images that were over three times clearer than prior observations.
Astoundingly, the newly captured images revealed ring and spiral structures in 27 of these protoplanetary disks. For 15 of them, this marks the very first identification of such formations in this research.
Combining their findings with earlier studies from different star-forming regions, the team concluded that these characteristic substructures begin to emerge in disks larger than 30 astronomical units (AU) shortly after the birth of a star, just several hundred thousand years into its formation.
This pivotal discovery suggests that planets may start forming significantly earlier than scientists had believed, coinciding with the presence of rich gas and dust in the disk. In essence, these planets evolve alongside their very young host stars.
