Astronomers Make Shocking Find on Earth's Doorstep
In a groundbreaking revelation, astronomers at the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii have traced the origins of the newly discovered asteroid 2024 YR4 to an unexpected source. This Earth-crossing asteroid, found in December 2024, surfaces from the central Main Belt—a region historically not linked with such bodies.
Asteroid 2024 YR4: A Rock with Unique Features
2024 YR4 is anything but ordinary. "This asteroid spins on its axis every 20 minutes and rotates in a retrograde direction, sporting a flattened, irregular shape with the density of solid rock," explained Bryce Bolin, lead author of the study. These unique characteristics are essential in gauging the asteroid's risk for Earth impact and informing potential deflection strategies.
Impact Threats: Moon Collision Still a Possibility
Initial projections raised alarms about a possible collision with Earth in 2032, but further examination has eased those fears. However, experts do estimate a 2% chance that YR4 could collide with the Moon. Measuring approximately 50-60 meters in diameter—similar to a football field—YR4 is among the largest celestial bodies that could impact the Moon.
If it were to collide, it could offer scientists a rare opportunity to study the relationship between asteroid size and crater creation, something that has been nearly impossible to measure directly.
