WORCESTER – On a sunny Monday morning, the streets of Worcester buzzed with energy as over 1,200 spirited students from Assumption University donned blue shirts and set off to make a difference in their community.
This day marked the inaugural Assumption University Day of Service, an initiative aimed at fostering a culture of giving back among students and reinforcing the institution’s commitment to the common good.
Classrooms were emptied as students and faculty members rolled up their sleeves and headed out to tackle various community projects ranging from picking up litter to revitalizing neglected parks and weeding flower beds.
Assumption University President Greg Weiner expressed his pride in this new tradition, stating, “Our mission is about awakening in students a devotion to the common good, and today is a testament to that. Service is woven into the very fabric of who we are.”
The university partnered with more than a dozen local organizations to provide a variety of volunteer opportunities. Among the largest groups, nearly 300 students focused their efforts on properties managed by the Worcester Housing Authority at Great Brook Valley.
Other significant contributors included the Boys and Girls Club, Veterans Inc., and the EcoTarium, all of which benefitted from the enthusiastic support of the students.
Joseph Mitchell, a senior from Franklin, led a team working diligently at Great Brook Valley.
“It’s really fulfilling to see the immediate impact of our work,” he shared. “We can already see the difference in the flower beds and the surrounding area.” For Mitchell, who has grown fond of Worcester during his four years at the university, this day was a perfect opportunity to give back to a city that has given him so much.
The CEO of the Worcester Housing Authority, Alex Corrales, emphasized the significance of the student volunteers.
Noting that their efforts are crucial for the maintenance of many properties, he said, “Having Assumption’s students come in with such enthusiasm means we can enhance the community and conserve valuable resources at the same time. We look forward to continuing this partnership annually.”
Junior Mardochee Mexil, who participated in the day’s activities, found great joy in contributing alongside his peers.
“This is my first time volunteering as part of a team,” he said after a rewarding day of weeding. “It’s great to be out in the city, connecting with people and helping to improve our surroundings.”
The success of the first annual Day of Service has set a hopeful tone for future events.
With organizers optimistic that this initiative will grow and further inspire students to engage with and uplift their community. As Assumption University continues to promote service and social responsibility, students are reminded that even small efforts can lead to meaningful change.
This is only the beginning of a tradition that promises to strengthen the bonds between the university and the city of Worcester.
