In a surprising turn of events, Apple's highly anticipated new smart home hub, which was initially expected to launch this year, may now be delayed until 2026, as reported by Bloomberg’s tech insider Mark Gurman.
According to Gurman's latest Power On newsletter, Apple is “considering a delay until 2026” for its smart home command center due to significant engineering challenges, particularly with the redesigned Siri voice assistant that is set to power the device. This news comes as a disappointment to fans eagerly awaiting new smart home features associated with Apple's ecosystem.
Initially, whispers suggested that the product could make its debut alongside this year's iPhone 17 series, scheduled for a September release. However, these plans appear to be faltering as development hurdles associated with Siri, the device's voice-controlled interface, have slowed down progress. Gurman emphasized, “The device will be primarily voice-driven, making Siri's reliability and performance critical to its success.”
Despite the delays, Apple is not sitting idle. Development on the device, codenamed J490, continues, with reports indicating that select Apple employees are actively testing the hub in their own homes, trying to fine-tune its capabilities.
Interestingly, Gurman likened the new product to the Google Nest Hub, noting it may not significantly boost Apple's revenue in the immediate term. Nevertheless, this endeavor could pave the way for more innovative offerings in the smart home arena.
In fact, Apple has its sights set on future advancements with another device in the works, codenamed J595. This subsequent product aims to incorporate features like an AI personality, added sensors, and even a robotic arm designed to adjust the screen positioning on your desk, kitchen counter, or nightstand. A bold move that could redefine how users interact with their smart environments.
Moreover, this delay coincides with Apple's ongoing efforts to enhance its Siri functionality, which was initially showcased during the WWDC 2024 event. The tech giant revealed that more personalized features for Siri would be rolled out within the next year, likely between September 2025 with the launch of iOS 19 and March 2026 with iOS 19.4.
As Apple grapples with these challenges, the tech world is left on edge, wondering how these developments will shape the future of smart home technology and whether the new hub will ultimately live up to the hype when it finally arrives. Stay tuned for updates, as we will be monitoring this story closely!
