Last year, Apple proudly touted the iPhone 16 series with the slogan "Built for Apple Intelligence." However, if insider Mark Gurman’s insights from his newsletter Power On are correct, users might have to wait until 2027 to see this promise come to life.
The much-discussed Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI features designed for its devices, has been mired in controversy. Its current offerings are far from competitive with rivals, and the highly anticipated upgrade to Siri has faced numerous delays.
In fact, Apple has encountered such significant backlash that it faced a lawsuit for false advertising. Amid rising concerns, Apple executives are reportedly taking "intense personal accountability" and are exploring collaborations, including a potential partnership with Google to leverage its advanced AI model, Gemini.
But according to Gurman, the two major advancements Apple is pursuing might only see the light of day in 2027. The company plans to transition Siri to utilize more sophisticated Large Language Models (LLMs) and upgrade its AI server chips for enhanced performance.
Fans have eagerly awaited a more intelligent Siri since the launch of the iPhone 16, with initial expectations aiming for a rollout alongside the iPhone 17. If delays stretch out to 2027, this could potentially be one of Apple's gravest missteps.
While improved chips for AI servers might enhance user experience, the essential AI features need to be introduced first. Competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S25 series and Google Pixel 9 already offer a slew of advanced AI functionalities, as do Chinese brands such as Huawei and Xiaomi.
Interestingly, 2027 will mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, a milestone that Apple plans to celebrate with the release of two new models: an eagerly awaited foldable iPhone and a sleek new Pro variant featuring an uninterrupted glass design.
By the time these updates arrive, consumers might just have moved on, prioritizing the latest iPhone models over Apple's delayed AI aspirations.
