Apple's AI-Powered iPhone Upgrade Cycle Fizzles: What It Means for the Future

Apple's ambitious leap into artificial intelligence (AI) isn’t quite the game-changer it hoped to be. With the recent launch of Apple Intelligence, analysts are expressing disappointment over the expected 'super cycle upgrade' for iPhones that has yet to materialize.

This month, Apple is set to release its earnings report, marking its first since the debut of Apple Intelligence. Market predictions had been bullish, anticipating that the new AI features integrated within the iPhone 15 Pro models would entice users to upgrade. Yet, early indicators suggest the excitement has waned.

Analyst Craig Moffett from MoffettNathanson recently downgraded Apple’s stock to 'sell,' highlighting a noticeable lack of consumer enthusiasm for the AI functionality. 'Not only have we not seen any sign of an upgrade cycle, but we have also observed growing evidence that consumers remain indifferent to AI features,' Moffett noted.

Apple presented the iPhone 16, launched in September, as a revolutionary device designed specifically to harness the power of AI. However, even though the hype surrounding Apple Intelligence was palpable at first, reality is beginning to set in. Morningstar analyst William Kerwin commented that the initial excitement has transitioned into tempered growth expectations for this year, with more optimistic forecasts for the second year following the launch.

Reports also indicate a decline in preorders: Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known Apple analyst, indicated that the iPhone 16 series sold approximately 37 million units during its first preorder weekend—a 12.7% drop from the previous year’s iPhone 15 release. This decline underscores the challenges Apple faces in maintaining its traditionally vigorous upgrade cycle.

While Wall Street initially responded favorably to Apple’s AI announcements during the Worldwide Developers Conference, the full capabilities of Apple Intelligence are still in development. Deepwater Asset Management's Gene Munster remains hopeful that a significant upgrade super cycle could still materialize, but he suggests it may not happen until late fiscal 2025 or early 2026. 'They still haven't put all the pieces in place yet,' Munster remarked, hinting at the substantial work that lies ahead for Apple.

As the competition in the smartphone sector intensifies and competitors roll out their AI innovations, Apple’s failure to excite consumers about its AI features may hinder its strategy to create a transformative upgrade cycle. The clock is ticking for Apple to demonstrate why its AI integration deserves the spotlight and can once again elevate the iconic brand to new heights. Will Apple manage to revive the excitement, or are we witnessing the unraveling of a once-reliable upgrade cycle? Stay tuned, as the implications for both consumers and investors could be monumental!
