Introduction of E2EE RCS Messaging

The GSM Association has announced that the newly updated RCS specifications will now feature E2EE, utilizing the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol. Previous RCS Developments

Prior to this initiative, Apple had introduced RCS support for iPhones in the iOS 18 update released in September. Although iMessage already integrated E2EE from the start, this feature was not extended to RCS messaging due to the limitations of earlier RCS standards, which lacked cross-platform support. Google Messages also adopted E2EE by default for RCS texts, but this encryption was only applied to conversations between users of Google Messages, leaving exchanges with iMessage users or other RCS clients on Android unprotected.
