The Star Awards drought continues for Mediacorp actor Andie Chen, who left the ceremony once again without a trophy. This year, the 40-year-old was nominated for three prestigious awards, including Best Actor for his poignant role as a strict father in "Born to Shine." Despite his stellar performance, the coveted Best Actor award was claimed by Christopher Lee, who also won Best Programme Host.
In a heartwarming moment captured on camera, Christopher approached Andie to share his condolences, humorously prompting Andie to quip, "You still have the cheek to come up to me?" They exchanged hugs amidst the friendly banter, but clearly, Andie felt the weight of the moment.
Meeting with Andie, it’s hard not to feel a pang of sympathy for a man who has been yearning for recognition for over 16 years since his first nomination. When asked about comments he has received, he chuckled, saying, "Some tell me I just need to work harder," and replied, "But it has been a long time, and I am already doing my best." Despite the disappointment, Andie expressed a sense of peace, mentioning, "I think that feeling [of devastation] peaked a few years ago. Right now, I guess I will have to wait till the heavens decide that I deserve it."
Andie lightened the mood with humor, mentioning that his family has adapted to his award-show misfortunes. His wife, former actress Kate Pang, showed her support with a sweet message saying, "You are the best!" Meanwhile, Andie's parents, who have been loyal attendees for years, remarked that they would just wait to head home with him.
Yet, it’s his nine-year-old daughter Avery who wore her heart on her sleeve, revealing her disappointment when she heard he didn’t win. Andie, ever the optimist, sees these moments as invaluable lessons for his kids. "They have never seen me stop, and I am not about to stop now. If you really love what you are doing, you just keep going," he said.
Andie and Kate also have a ten-year-old son, Aden, who offers additional motivation for the couple. Despite the evident sadness surrounding his losses, Andie found joy in witnessing his colleagues' victories at the awards.
As for the popularity contest, Andie shared his reservations: "There are many aspects of the ‘popularity’ contest that don't sit well with me." Nevertheless, he remains focused on his ultimate goal: earning an acting award. "An acting award is something that I have been working towards my entire career, and it would be nice to be recognized," Andie concluded, staying hopeful for the future.
