AMEX KrisFlyer Ascend Cardholders Offered New Route to Elite Status – But Is It Worth It?

Efforts to climb the ladder of travel perks just got a little more complicated for American Express KrisFlyer Ascend cardholders. Traditionally, these cardholders could achieve KrisFlyer Elite Gold status by simply spending S$15,000 on Singapore Airlines or Scoot tickets within the first year of card approval.
However, with travel costs rising and the expensive nature of airline tickets, many have found that reaching this threshold on a single ticket is no easy feat, especially if you're not booking for a group.
In a bid to encourage more card usage, AMEX has relaunched an annual promotion offering a fast track to KrisFlyer Elite Gold status, although it comes with increased hurdles this time around. Running from February 1 to July 31, 2025, this year's offer requires a minimum total spend of S$16,000, with S$6,000 needing to be directly spent on Singapore Airlines or Scoot bookings.
This promotion is accessible to all AMEX KrisFlyer Ascend cardholders, but not to those who already hold KrisFlyer Elite Gold status or higher as of August 1, 2025. Importantly, no prior registration is needed, and those who’ve previously taken advantage of the fast track can still participate.
What's in It for You?
For cardholders who stay on track with their spending, there are added incentives: the first 250 members to reach the S$16,000 threshold will receive a S$150 eCapitaVoucher, while those who hit S$20,000 will earn a premium 28-inch Samsonite luggage piece. However, only one gift is permitted per cardholder, complicating the incentive even further.
Eligible purchases for the required S$6,000 include bookings made directly through the Singapore Airlines website, mobile app, or via phone, as well as the Scoot website. Bookings through third-party travel agencies won’t count.
Meanwhile, to reach the overall S$16,000 requirement, cardholders can tap into a wide array of spending categories, including retail purchases, dining, and accommodation—though, spending in certain categories like education, donations, and insurance premiums is excluded.
The Experienced Traveler’s Dilemma
KrisFlyer Elite Gold status provides several perks, such as additional baggage allowances, priority check-in, and access to airport lounges, making it attractive to frequent travelers. However, achieving the required spend may come with considerable opportunity cost.
Cardholders earn 2 miles per dollar spent on Singapore Airlines or Scoot tickets but lose out on potential higher rewards from other cards that offer better earning rates.
Despite previous promotions being more forgiving, including a lower S$12,500 total spend requirement just a year ago, the current promotion's demands may deter potential participants.
The speed with which a person can accumulate S$16,000 largely depends on their spending habits and frequency of travel.
So, Is It Worth It?
While KrisFlyer Elite Gold status can enhance your travel experience, the significant spending required raises questions about whether the rewards justify the effort.
With a challenging landscape ahead, prospective cardholders need to assess their travel patterns and whether this high threshold aligns with their lifestyle.
From February to July 2025, the offer stands as an enticing yet daunting opportunity for AMEX KrisFlyer Ascend cardholders to potentially elevate their travel experiences. Only time will tell if the benefits outweigh the costs, leaving many to wonder if this path to elite status is as golden as it sounds or just another tricky travel trap.
