In an exciting moment for paleontology enthusiasts, a bone from the largest stegosaur fossil ever unearthed in the UK is making its grand return to its hometown—Swindon! This remarkable piece of vertebra connects modern visitors with a dinosaur that roamed the Earth approximately 150 million years ago.
The original swindon stegosaur was discovered in 1874 at the now-demolished quarry pit of Swindon Brick and Tile Company, a site that has since transformed into a retail area home to Halford's and The Range. Experts proudly claim this skeleton to be the most complete stegosaur ever found in the UK, with its primary remains currently held at the prestigious Natural History Museum in London. However, as history often goes, many smaller parts of the original find found their way into private collections.
Marina Strinkovsky, a member of the Swindon Borough Council, couldn’t contain her enthusiasm: “It’s fantastic that a piece of it is coming home.” The anticipation builds as the vertebra will soon be on display at the Museum & Art Swindon located on Euclid Street. Strinkovsky highlighted the significance of Swindon’s role in paleontological history, noting that numerous renowned fossil hunters either lived in or visited Swindon during the late 19th century in search of fossil treasures.
The stegosaur, known for its distinctive armor and prehistoric charm, continues to capture the imagination of residents, stirring intrigue across generations. This impressive dinosaur was part of the Jurassic period and was primarily herbivorous, featuring unique plates and spikes along its back that have become iconic images of the era.
The beloved piece of history was retrieved by dedicated paleontologists Dr. Neville Hollingworth and Sally Hollingworth, who collaborated with museum volunteers through a project funded by Arts Council England called 'Unlocking Collections.' The duo spotted this remarkable specimen for sale and recognized its historical significance straight away, as it matched the location from which original stegosaur remains were excavated.
“We’re delighted that Museum & Art Swindon has put this truly unique find on display,” said the Hollingworths. They expressed hope that showcasing this vertebra will elevate awareness of Swindon’s rich Jurassic past, captivating the hearts and minds of visitors eager to connect with the incredible story of this ancient giant.
