ALMA's Exciting New Observation Cycle

Astronomy enthusiasts, prepare for a cosmic journey! The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is kicking off its latest observation cycle—Cycle 11—on October 1, 2024. This marks the start of a thrilling period that promises to unveil the mysteries of the universe.

Unprecedented Influx of Proposals

In a testament to the growing interest in astronomical research, the recent proposal review process saw an unprecedented influx of submissions. A staggering 1,712 proposals were submitted, totaling a record 31,608 hours requested on the 12-meter Array. This enthusiastic response resulted in an oversubscription rate of 7.4, the highest in ALMA's history.

Meticulous Proposal Review Process

The ALMA Proposal Review Committee (APRC) convened from June 24 to 28, 2024, meticulously evaluating 42 Large Programs with the assistance of 82 external Science Assessors. An impressive 1,095 individual reviewers contributed nearly 17,000 evaluations in a distributed peer review process. The meticulous nature of this review underscores the community's dedication to excellence in scientific inquiry.

Enthusiasm for Cycle 11

John Carpenter, an esteemed ALMA Observatory Scientist, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming cycle, stating, “The rising demand for ALMA time reflects scientists’ ambition to explore the mysteries of the Universe. We’re eager to see what discoveries this cycle will bring.” With an impressive roster of high-priority proposals selected, ALMA has allocated 4,107 hours for 245 Grade A and B proposals, alongside provisions for backups to ensure maximized scientific outcomes.

Improvements in Review Process

Significant improvements were implemented in this year’s proposal review process based on community feedback, ensuring a fair and unbiased evaluation system. Rapid responses to identified issues and the introduction of enhanced review tools were part of the efforts to continually fine-tune ALMA’s operations. The ALMA Observatory extends its gratitude to the Proposal Review Committee and reviewers whose dedication is pivotal to the success of Cycle 11.

Diverse Studies Ahead

As Cycle 11 gets underway, astronomers will dive into a variety of studies across diverse fields, from cosmology to planetary science, laying the groundwork for groundbreaking discoveries. For those keen to delve deeper, more information regarding the Grade A and B proposals can be found on the ALMA Science Portal.

Looking Forward

It's a thrilling time for scientists and the astronomical community alike, with Cycle 11 set to shed light on the cosmos like never before! Stay tuned for updates and discoveries that will reshape our understanding of the universe.
