Malaysia Discovers New Covid-19 Variant: XFG!

In a startling announcement, Malaysia's Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad revealed the emergence of a new Covid-19 variant, dubbed XFG, during a remarkable surge in genomic surveillance efforts. This new variant now represents 8.2% of all Covid-19 cases reported in the country.

As of the 35th epidemiology week, the total number of documented cases reached 43,087. Dzulkefly emphasized the importance of ongoing genomic surveillance, which has also identified other variants dominating the case landscape: NB.1.8.1 at 34%, JN.1 at 18.1%, and XEC at 13.3%.

Surprising Decline in Covid-19 Cases!

In a twist of good news, Malaysia has seen a dramatic 49.5% drop in Covid-19 cases compared to the same time last year, when cases peaked at 85,297. However, the situation remains serious, with one death—a 91-year-old bedridden individual—reported this week, bringing the total to three fatalities in 2025.
