A Nation on Alert: Polio Strikes Again

In a worrying development, Pakistan has reported two more cases of polio, bringing the total for 2025 to an alarming 21. The latest report comes amidst ongoing efforts to combat this crippling disease.

The Struggle Continues

Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the last bastions where polio is still endemic, as reported by the World Health Organization. The new infections were confirmed in Kohistan Lower district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Badin district of Sindh. A six-year-old girl from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and a 21-month-old girl from Sindh are the latest victims.

A Disturbing Trend

This year's cases are predominantly seen in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with 13 cases reported so far, while Sindh has documented six. Additional cases have also emerged from Punjab and the Gilgit-Baltistan region, highlighting a widespread issue that authorities are struggling to contain.

Rising Cases Amidst Vaccination Efforts

Despite the government's efforts, including a Sub-National Polio Vaccination Campaign set for September 1-7—aiming to reach over 28 million children under the age of five in 99 districts—polio cases continue to climb. Earlier this month, the 19th case of the year was reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone.

A Sharp Resurgence Underscored

While the country had only reported six polio cases in 2023 and a mere one in 2021, the resurgence was stark in 2024, which saw a dramatic spike to 74 cases. The need for every child to receive the polio vaccine has never been more urgent as Pakistan battles to eliminate this debilitating disease once and for all.
