Research from Surfshark, a prominent VPN service, sheds light on the data collection practices of major AI chatbots popular on platforms like the Apple App Store. These include ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and others. Surprisingly, it turns out that Google Gemini is the most invasive in terms of data collection, with DeepSeek not even cracking the top three.

The study reviewed the privacy policies of 10 top AI chatbots and highlighted that Gemini collects a staggering 22 out of 35 types of user data. This includes sensitive information such as precise location, user-generated content, device contact lists, and browsing histories—far exceeding the data accrued by its rivals.

How DeepSeek Really Measures Up

When it comes to data handling, DeepSeek holds a middle ground compared to other AI applications. It gathers around 11 unique data types, focusing primarily on contact information, user content, and diagnostic data. In comparison, ChatGPT collects 10 different types of data, also allowing users the option to manage and delete their chat histories through temporary chat modes.

Despite the criticisms directed at DeepSeek, it pales in comparison to the privacy invasions posed by American counterparts. For instance, while DeepSeek reports potential data storage in China, its practices do afford users a degree of control over their data, which is not always the case with other AI platforms.

The implications of these data collection practices are significant, especially considering that around 30% of the examined chatbots were found to share sensitive data, including location and browsing history, with third parties. Copilot, Poe, and Jasper particularly shine in this regard by linking user data with third-party analytics to tailor advertisements and measure marketing effectiveness.
