Remembering Laichan Goh
In a heartbreaking announcement, the Singaporean fashion world mourns the loss of Laichan Goh, a trailblazer who redefined the cheongsam, passing away peacefully at 62 on April 14 after a courageous seven-year battle with brain cancer.
A Creative Genius
Goh, who opened his first boutique in the iconic but now-demolished Liang Court in the 1980s, was widely celebrated for his elegant and contemporary designs that fused traditional elements with modern aesthetics. His atelier, Laichan, now stands proudly in Orchard Road's Mandarin Gallery.
Without any formal training, Goh's figure-hugging cheongsams captivated a wide audience, earning him a reputation that transcended borders. His portfolio showcased bespoke couture, stage and screen costume design, and custom creations for Singapore's elite, including dignitaries and celebrities.
A Community Mourns
As news of his departure spread, tributes flooded in from the creative community. Costume designer Moe Kasim fondly remembered Goh as "the nicest and most soft-spoken person," while composer Mark Chan praised his exquisite craftsmanship. Fashion director Daniel Boey recalled the last major show they worked on together in June 2024, noting Goh's departure from his typically vibrant demeanor.
Pioneering a New Aesthetic
"Laichan was instrumental in redefining the Chinese fashion narrative in Singapore," said Boey. "He brought a modern, sexy twist to the cheongsam and established a strong design identity that resonates with cultural pride. It's vital for upcoming designers to learn that tradition can be celebrated without compromise."
A Man of Vision and Values
Angela Loh, founder of the UltraLuxe festival and a long-time friend, expressed her shock at Goh’s passing, praising his refined vision that elevated Singapore's fashion landscape. Likewise, Sylvester Ng, editor-in-chief of Icon Singapore magazine, recalled a time they worked on a project together, pointing out Goh's nurturing spirit and readiness to share his wisdom.
A Loving Brother and Mentor
Throughout his trials, Goh remained devoted to his family. His sister, Michelle, shared touching anecdotes about his commitment to their youngest brother, Eddie, showing love even amidst personal pain. Eddie is now set to lead the Laichan brand into the future.
Final Farewell
Goh's wake will take place at Woodlands Memorial on April 18, 2 PM, with a funeral following at Mandai Crematorium on April 19. His family has requested attendees to wear white or attire crafted by Laichan, in remembrance of a man who transformed the fashion narrative and touched countless lives.
