In a poignant story that tugs at the heartstrings, Madam Du Huzhen, a 103-year-old woman from Guizhou province, China, passed away on March 8 while clinging to a pillow cover from her wedding day, a symbol of her unwavering love and devotion. Her husband, Huang Junfu, left for Singapore in 1944, and the couple's last correspondence came in the form of a letter dated January 15, 1952, in which he informed her he was working in Malaysia.

At the age of 19, Madam Du married Mr. Huang, who was three years her junior. They welcomed their son, Huang Fachang, the same year they temporarily parted ways. As a devoted mother, Madam Du worked tirelessly, engaging in farm labor and crafting straw sandals to support her family. Despite the adversity she faced, she held onto the hope that Mr. Huang would one day return, steadfastly rejecting numerous marriage proposals, citing, "What if he returns someday?"

Mr. Huang's last letter echoed his affection and expressed his desire to reunite, urging Madam Du to prioritize their son's education above all else. Sadly, after his move to Malaysia in 1950 and later to Singapore, he was lost to time. Government records showed that Madam Du received no more letters, yet she clung to the dream of reuniting with him until her last breath.

Madam Du's resilience is highlighted by her granddaughter, Huang Liying, who described her as an eternally optimistic soul. She continued to inspire her family, often encouraging them to study hard and contribute positively to society.

As we reflect on Madam Du's incredible journey of enduring love and hope, her story serves as a reminder of the power of faith and the indomitable human spirit. Her life, marked by both sacrifice and steadfast devotion, leaves a legacy that will not be forgotten.
