In a groundbreaking announcement, Mark Zuckerberg declared that Meta is set to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into developing cutting-edge artificial intelligence products. The centerpiece of this ambitious plan is a colossal data center nearly the size of Manhattan!
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has been aggressively securing multimillion-dollar contracts with top AI researchers, offering salaries that soar to $100 million. This initiative aims to accelerate the creation of advanced AI systems, potentially surpassing human intelligence in various tasks, a pursuit commonly referred to as 'super-intelligence' or 'artificial general intelligence'.
The first of these mega structures, named Prometheus, is slated to go live in 2026, while another, Hyperion, is expected to scale up to an impressive 5 gigawatts in the years to come. Zuckerberg emphasized that each of these 'titan clusters' would have a footprint that could significantly rival that of Manhattan!
In a recent industry report, SemiAnalysis highlighted that Meta is poised to be the first AI laboratory to launch a supercluster with over a gigawatt of power. With an impressive advertising revenue of nearly $165 billion last year, Zuckerberg reassured investors that the company possesses the financial resources necessary to undertake this substantial expenditure.
"We have the capital from our business to do this," he stated, addressing concerns about the potential return on this massive investment.
Meta recently revamped its AI operations under a new division named Superintelligence Labs, following challenges with its open-source Llama 4 model and significant talent departures. The company is optimistic that this division will unlock new revenue streams through applications such as the Meta AI app, innovative image-to-video ad tools, and advanced smart glasses.
Analyst Gil Luria from DA Davidson noted that Meta’s heavy investment in AI has already proven beneficial, enhancing its ad business by enabling the sale of more ads at higher prices.
In a strategic move, Zuckerberg has personally spearheaded a recruitment campaign for talent at Superintelligence Labs, which will be led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and ex-GitHub chief Nat Friedman, following a significant investment of $14.3 billion in Scale.
Looking ahead, Meta has ramped up its 2025 capital expenditure forecasts to between $64 billion and $72 billion, a strategy designed to strengthen its competitive edge against formidable rivals like OpenAI and Google. The battle for AI supremacy is heating up, and Meta is determined to lead the charge!
