Big News for Kentucky Football Fans!
Mark Stoops has thrilling news for Wildcats supporters as the game week kicks off: Zach Calzada will officially be the starting quarterback for Kentucky's Week 1 showdown against Toledo, according to reports from Pete Thamel.
A Competitive Battle for the Spot
Calzada, entering his seventh and final season of college football, won the starting role after a fierce competition with Cutter Boley. While it seemed like Calzada was destined for the position, Boley made significant strides over the summer, keeping the competition fierce.
Offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan praised both quarterbacks, saying, "We’re constantly evaluating these guys and their progression. Cutter’s been doing a lot of good things. His calmness on the field has really improved, and he's pushing the needle. Of course, Zach is also doing a fantastic job."
Calzada’s Stellar Track Record
Calzada isn't new to the spotlight. In 2024, he was honored as the Southland Conference Player of the Year, completing 65% of his passes for an impressive 3,791 yards, ranking him fifth in FCS. He threw for 35 touchdowns (second in FCS) and rushed for over 540 yards. His efforts led his team to the FCS Quarterfinals, demonstrating his prowess on the field.
Before his standout performance in FCS, Calzada endured a challenging season at Auburn due to a shoulder injury. He first captured attention at Texas A&M, where he replaced the injured Haynes King and guided the Aggies to an unforgettable victory over No. 1 Alabama.
A Return to the SEC
Now, Calzada is eager for another chance in the SEC. "I’ve been itching to get back since I left. It’s been a long road, and there were times I wondered if I’d ever play at a high level again. My parents instilled in me the values of persistence and faith, and I’m thrilled to be back," he expressed passionately.
Managing the Game, Not Just Stats
While Calzada's past performance boasts astonishing numbers, he knows Kentucky’s strategy won't rely solely on his passing ability. This season, he will focus on game management, keeping things simple and smart. "If the big plays aren’t there, I won’t force it. I’ll take the checkdowns, hand the ball off, and just manage the game, because big plays will come naturally,” he said, emphasizing a team-oriented mindset.
What’s Next for Kentucky?
As Kentucky gears up for the Toledo game, all eyes will be on Calzada to see how his experience and cool head under pressure will translate into wins. With a balanced attack involving both the run and his strategic passing, Kentucky might just surprise their opponents this season!
