In a disappointing turn of events for San Diego Padres fans, veteran right-hander Yu Darvish is set to begin the season on the injured list due to elbow inflammation. This news was confirmed by Padres manager Mike Shildt during a press briefing, with reports from Dennis Lin of The Athletic and AJ Cassavell of MLB.com shedding light on the situation.
Shildt reassured fans that the plan is to give Darvish time to rest, suggesting that with proper recovery and training, he should be back on the mound soon. However, his absence opens up two rotation spots for competitors Kyle Hart, Stephen Kolek, and Randy Vázquez, potentially altering the Padres' game plan for the early part of the season.
This isn't the first time Darvish has faced elbow issues; he's been plagued by inflammation for several seasons, finishing the 2023 year on the injured list due to the same concern. The 2024 season wasn’t any better, as he dealt with a multitude of setbacks including neck tightness, a groin strain, an undisclosed family issue, and recurring elbow problems. Last season, he managed to log only 81 2/3 innings.
While Shildt is optimistic about Darvish’s return, the increasing frequency of these injuries is alarming, especially considering he will turn 39 this August. With a career heavily impacted by injury, the Padres have to be cautious as they navigate this season without a key player.
The Padres' pitching rotation has already faced challenges; Joe Musgrove underwent Tommy John surgery last October, creating a significant void in their starting lineup. With the loss of Musgrove, the team will rely on a rotation led by Darvish, Dylan Cease, and Michael King. They've also brought in new talent in the form of Nick Pivetta, adding some depth but still leaving room for uncertainty.
As a result of Darvish’s injury and other factors, the competition for the final rotation spots is heating up. Matt Waldron is currently unavailable due to an oblique strain, which further minimizes the options. Kyle Hart, who shone in the KBO with a stellar 2.69 ERA and high strikeout rate, is inexperienced in the majors but has made his presence known in camp, despite battling flu symptoms.
Stephen Kolek made his major league debut last year and spent the season in San Diego's bullpen. While he posted a 5.21 ERA, he had better underlying statistics, indicating promise for improvement. He’s made strides in spring training, showcasing a 2.19 ERA in 12 1/3 innings.
Lastly, Randy Vázquez’s performance has been slightly less impressive with a 4.87 ERA last year over 20 starts. He’s only had limited appearances in the Cactus League this spring but is staying active with backfield sessions and simulated games.
As the Padres kick off their season, the team must navigate this transition period, and fans will be eagerly watching to see how the rotation reshapes itself in Darvish's absence. Stay tuned as we monitor updates on his recovery and the performances of the emerging pitchers!
