In the midst of an intense battle to reclaim their spot atop the AL East, the New York Yankees are grappling with fresh concerns after MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred hinted at potential expansion and realignment.
Picture this: the Yankees could find themselves in a brand-new division alongside rivals like the Red Sox, Mets, and Phillies. As manager Aaron Boone remarked with a chuckle, "It’d be a heavyweight division. I don’t know. That feels far away.”
While the prospect of tougher competition looms, it might also bring benefits—like a reduced travel schedule that could ease the physical toll on players. Pitcher Luke Weaver expressed support for this idea, saying, "If we can do something that helps with less travel, I’d definitely be in favor of that.”
Injury Woes Continue for Yankees
The injury bug remains a significant issue for the Yankees. Just as reliever Jonathan Loáisiga was nearing a return from the injured list due to back tightness, he reported new discomfort in his elbow and triceps. Manager Boone stated they are awaiting MRI results to determine the extent of the issue.
Loáisiga’s talent has often been overshadowed by his injury struggles, which have plagued him throughout his time with the Yankees, including an IL stint this season after elbow surgery. Boone candidly noted, "It’s been an up and down season in that regard for him as he’s returned.”
Additional Injury Setbacks
Adding to their woes, Brent Headrick found himself on the 15-day IL after suffering a left forearm contusion from a comebacker. Though CT scans and X-rays revealed no serious damage, Boone described Headrick as "still not quite right" after he attempted to play catch earlier that day.
Due to timing issues, the Yankees took the field short-handed during Tuesday’s game, unable to bring in a fresh arm in the bullpen.
Positive News on the Rehab Front
Meanwhile, relief seems to be on the horizon. Fernando Cruz continues his rehab from an oblique strain and is nearing a return, as Boone hinted he could be back in action soon.
Ryan Yarbrough, also recovering from an oblique strain, was scheduled for his second start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but rain postponed the game. Boone stated that they are strategizing Yarbrough's return, weighing roles as the team currently boasts five healthy starters.
A Glimmer of Hope
Amidst these challenges, the Yankees activated Amed Rosario from the injured list after a minimum 10-day absence due to an SC joint sprain, offering a much-needed boost to the roster.
As the Yankees navigate these turbulent waters, they hold onto the hope that with each challenge, they can find a path back to the summit of the league.
