Larian Studios has officially closed the book on Baldur's Gate 3, especially after the triumphant Update 8 in April. With the team shifting its focus to new ventures, studio head Swen Vincke revealed the surprising reasoning behind their decision to forgo paid DLC for the blockbuster RPG, declaring it the "boring" choice.
Vincke first revealed doubts about the potential for Baldur's Gate 3 DLC back in September 2023, shortly after the game launched to rave reviews. He mentioned that while expanding upon the base game would be "very hard," it wasn’t impossible. However, just five months later, he confirmed that the studio would "move on," nixing any hopes for DLC or even a Baldur's Gate 4. Vincke stated, "We are not a company that's meant to create DLCs or expansions. We've tried it several times before and failed. Our ambitions are much larger than that."
In a candid interview with GameSpot, Vincke further explained their reasoning. When asked why Larian decided against developing DLC despite the game’s immense popularity, he didn't hold back: "It’s boring, is really the honest answer. We dabbled in the DLC business and realized there was no passion behind it. Sure, happy players mean happy business, but a happy developer fosters a genuinely happy player. What we're doing now makes our developers way happier."
Vincke highlighted the pressure to produce DLC after a major success—"You've got a huge hit and you're expected to churn out DLC after DLC with expectations of piling money!" he said. But when they took a moment to reflect, their priorities shifted. "Progressive insight isn’t bad; sometimes you need to realize when you’re headed down an unfulfilling path and pivot accordingly," he remarked.
As for what Larian has lined up next now that Baldur's Gate 3 is wrapped up—aside from addressing remaining bug fixes—the specifics remain under wraps. Vincke teased that the studio is “deep in the trenches” on a "crazy ambitious" new project that is "shaping up quite well." Plus, he mentioned they are also preparing for a second project, admitting, "It’s not the easiest task in the universe because we create complex games with numerous player choices."
So, while fans won't be seeing DLC for Baldur's Gate 3, the future promises more exciting adventures from Larian Studios.
