In a dramatic night at Fenway Park, Walker Buehler, the Red Sox pitcher, and manager Alex Cora were shown the door after a heated argument over a controversial call during the game against the New York Mets.
The chaos unfolded in the third inning when Cora's fiery response came as a result of what many viewed as a missed strike call against Juan Soto. Tensions rose when Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor got hit by a pitch, a moment that didn't sit well with Buehler, who felt Lindor should have moved out of the way.
As the drama escalated, Lindor stole second base following a pitch deemed a ball by home plate umpire Mike Estabrook. However, replays revealed that the pitch had, in fact, caught the inside corner, raising further concerns among the Red Sox.
Buehler, visibly upset, confronted Estabrook about the blown call, resulting in his ejection. "It’s one of those things where you're conflicted," Buehler shared with reporters post-game. "I let my emotions get the better of me, and that’s disappointing. I put my bullpen in a tough spot, and that’s the hard part of it."
Following Buehler’s ejection, Cora didn’t hold back, storming out of the dugout to challenge the umpire, which quickly led to his own dismissal. Crew chief Laz Diaz explained, "Once he leaves the mound to argue balls and strikes, that's an immediate ejection. No exceptions."
With Buehler gone, lefty Brennan Bernardino took the mound and helped the team maintain control, as six relievers rallied to limit the Mets to just four hits and zero runs throughout the game.
Despite the tumultuous atmosphere, Buehler managed to strike out four and walked two in his 2 2/3 innings, lowering his ERA to a respectable 4.00, showcasing that even in chaos, there’s a silver lining.
