Cyclists Beware: GPS Units Are Facing a Major Malfunction!

A critical software glitch struck over the weekend, leaving riders with Wahoo BOLT V1 and ROAM V1 GPS units staring at a date stuck in the past—January 1, 2006! This major issue, which also affects the original ELMENT from 2016, has left users frustrated as they cope with a device that seems to have time-traveled backward.

What’s Going Wrong?

Folks thought the worst was just a minor inconvenience, but it has spiraled into chaos. The internal clock reset issue means that as soon as the device connects to GPS, it overrides any manual settings, reverting to that fateful date. This glitch causes disconnection issues, impossible speed readings, erratic pausing and resuming, and total GPS malfunction, meaning cyclists can't even properly track their rides!

The Real Cost of the Glitch

Completing a ride with erroneous data is extra painful for users, especially when the ride uploads to Strava displaying the wrong date. However, a workaround exists: users can fix their ride data by exporting the original file using FitFileTools, though this is a tedious process.

What’s Causing the Chaos?

While Wahoo hasn't fully disclosed the root of the problem, speculation points to a glitch linked to a 10-bit counter reaching its maximum of 1,024 weeks and resetting. This milestone coincides eerily with the date alteration over the weekend, leading to a perfect storm of GPS disruption!

When Will It Be Fixed?

All eyes are on Wahoo as they work towards a firmware fix. Their cycling product manager assured customers that the team is fully engaged in resolving this issue. While there's no set timeline for the fix, they're committed to sorting it out as quickly as possible.

In the Meantime...

If you can’t bear to ride without your GPS, why not try reverting to a classic style? Go old-school and ride without tech! It might feel a bit like sacrilege, but at least it won't frustrate you with the wrong date and data!

Stay tuned for updates as we follow the story and hope for a speedy resolution!
