CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia is ramping up its basketball program by announcing major additions to the support staff, spearheaded by Dean and Markel Families Men’s Head Basketball Coach Ryan Odom. On April 8, the coach revealed the hiring of new personnel: Kelsey Knoche as Director of Operations, Matt Hart as Director of Analytics, Billy Bales as Video Coordinator, and Ahmad Thomas as Director of Recruiting.

All four of these experts come with impressive credentials and a proven track record of success, having previously worked under Coach Odom at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). During their tenure (2023-25), the Rams amassed a stellar 52-21 record, marked by a triumphant march to the NCAA Tournament in 2025. In the 2024-25 season, VCU not only clinched the Atlantic-10 Tournament title but also shared the regular-season championship title, highlighting the effectiveness of Odom's coaching regime. Star players like Max Shulga and Jack Clark earned individual accolades, with Shulga named A-10 Player of the Year and Clark crowned Tournament MVP.

In an exciting twist, Odom also confirmed the return of established staff members, including Mike Curtis, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, who begins his 17th season, and Ethan Saliba, Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, celebrating an impressive 43rd year in the role.

Key Team Additions:

Kelsey Knoche: In her fifth season affiliated with Odom, Knoche has built a solid reputation managing operations. Previously, she oversaw day-to-day functions for VCU and handled major logistics during her time at Utah State. Knoche stands out as one of only 15 women to hold the role of Director of Basketball Operations in Division I for the 2024-25 season, breaking barriers for women in sports.

Matt Hart: Hart steps into the role of Director of Analytics armed with experience from both VCU and Utah State, where he contributed to a 26-win season and an NCAA berth. His background includes coaching at Daemen University, demonstrating his versatile skill set that merges analytical insights with on-court performance.

Billy Bales: With a strong connection to Odom and an extensive history in coaching, Bales brings his experience in video operations and player development to UVa. His journey includes crafting strategies that helped Utah State reach the NCAA Tournament and securing all-conference honors for athletes during his tenure.

Ahmad Thomas: A rising star in coaching, Thomas previously played four seasons at UNC Asheville and has significant experience in recruiting and player development. His leadership skills were pivotal in recruiting efforts at UNC Greensboro, where the Spartans achieved an impressive 20-12 season.

This influx of talent and expertise is a clear indication that UVA’s basketball program is gearing up for an exhilarating future. With such a strong support team and the return of veteran coaching staff, fans can expect a competitive edge that could transform the Cavaliers into a formidable force in college basketball. Stay tuned, as this season promises to be nothing short of thrilling for UVA basketball enthusiasts!
