UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the need for a 'pathway to peace,' as he opened the conference, marking the grim two-year anniversary of Sudan’s civil war.

Unprecedented Humanitarian Crisis

With aid agencies labeling the situation as the world’s worst humanitarian disaster, the UK has pledged an additional £120 million ($159 million) in food and medical aid. An alarming 30 million people across Sudan are currently in dire need of assistance, facing starvation and violence in the wake of the ongoing conflict.

A Stark Warning from the UN

Filippo Grandi, head of the UN refugee agency, sounded the alarm over the devastating consequences that will ensue if the global community continues to ignore Sudan's plight. The conflict has displaced over 12 million people, with horrific reports of genocide in Darfur and widespread sexual violence.

Ground Attacks Intensify Amid Desperation

The situation has grown increasingly dire, with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) ramping up aerial assaults on displaced people's camps in their quest for dominance. Satellite imagery reveals that the Zamzam camp, providing shelter to approximately 500,000, is being systematically ravaged by RSF forces.

A Survivor's Harrowing Tale

Nusra, displaced by violence in el-Fasher, revealed the chilling reality in Zamzam: "The RSF burned down the only field hospital and killed our volunteers." She recounted the loss of her family members amid relentless shelling and reported that water and medical supplies have become scarce.

Struggles Amidst Escape

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) report that over 20,000 individuals have fled to Tawila in just two days, with many arriving in critical condition and lacking the basic necessity of water. Survivors shared heart-wrenching stories of robbery by armed gangs during their escape, leaving them traumatized and bereft of their loved ones.

International Collaboration for Relief

This significant London conference, co-chaired by the UK, EU, and African Union, seeks to unify international partners to increase the delivery of essential aid and explore viable solutions to end hostilities. Critical to this effort is the absence of the main warring factions—Sudanese Armed Forces and RSF—whose representatives are being sidelined.

African Union envoy Bankole Adeoye made it clear that there is no military solution, urging an immediate ceasefire followed by inclusive dialogue to restore peace. He reaffirmed that the AU will not allow any disintegration of Sudan, stressing that the suffering of ordinary Sudanese civilians must end.
