A significant health alert has been issued for travelers as Michigan confirms its second measles case of the year, impacting an adult who had recently returned from international travel. This individual traveled through Kent County and made subsequent journeys between Michigan and New Jersey.

Dr. Adam London, the Health Officer at the Kent County Health Department (KCHD), emphasizes the critical nature of this finding, stating, “Measles is a highly contagious disease that continues to circulate both in the U.S. and globally. This case serves as a stark reminder of the virus’s potential for rapid spread and underscores the importance of vaccination.”

Risk of Exposure at Detroit Metro Airport

The adult infected with measles was last known to have visited the Detroit Metro Airport, placing travelers at risk of exposure. Specific areas highlighted include the Delta Sky Club in Terminal A, where the individual was present from 11:20 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as various locations in the airport from 6:45 p.m. on March 27 until 12:01 a.m. on March 28.

Monitoring for Symptoms

Health officials urge anyone who was in these locations during the specified times to monitor for measles symptoms for up to 21 days following their potential exposure. Symptoms may include:

- High fever (which can soar above 104°F) - Severe cough - Runny nose - Conjunctivitis (red, watery eyes) - Koplik spots (small, white lesions) inside the mouth - A characteristic red, raised, and blotchy rash that typically starts on the face and spreads across the body

Complications and Vaccine Effectiveness

Dr. Kristin Oldenberg, Medical Director at KCHD, warns, “Measles can lead to serious complications, particularly for young children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine is highly effective, providing 97% protection against measles after two doses.”

Those who may have been exposed should not go directly to a healthcare facility. Instead, they should contact their healthcare provider to discuss their symptoms and avoid potentially spreading the virus to others.

The measles vaccine remains a safe and effective method of prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a single dose of the vaccine offers approximately 93% effectiveness, while two doses raise that effectiveness to around 97%.
